Today, October 7th, is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary!
Our Lady herself gave St. Dominic the Most Holy Rosary in 1214. St. Dominic was in anguish over his then unsuccessful efforts at converting non-believers. Our Lady appeared to him and asked St. Dominic :
“Dear Dominic, do you know which weapon the Blessed Trinity wants to use to reform the world?” Dominic’s response was that Blessed Mary knew better than he because she is a part of our salvation. The Virgin Mary continued : “I want you to know that, in this kind of warfare, the battering ram has always been the Angelic Psalter which is the foundation stone of the New Testament. Therefore if you want to reach these hardened souls and win them over to God, preach my Psalter (the Rosary).”
The name “Angelic Psalter” refers to the fact that Hail Mary prayers are part of the Rosary. The first part of the Hail Mary prayer (“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee”~Luke 1:28) is from the angel Gabriel’s greeting to the Virgin Mary announcing that she would be the Mother of Jesus.
In our own modern times, the Virgin Mary has appeared in many parts of the world. In 1917, in one of her most famous apparitions, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta near Fatima, Portugal. On October 13, 1917, her 6th and last apparition to the shepherd children, she told them:
“I am the Lady of the Rosary. … I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. Let them continue saying it every day.”
As Our Lady requested, let us pray the Holy Rosary every day as a means to amend our lives. We can obtain pardon for our sins in the great Sacrament of Confession. Furthermore, we can pray the Holy Rosary for nations and for the whole world–especially for the conversion of sinners.
*The Virgin Mary’s intercession with God is so powerful that through recitation of the Rosary, God has worked countless miracles of healing, conversion, and protection including entire nations being saved from war and other catastrophes. Many such miracles are recorded in the book, “The Secret of the Rosary” by St. Louis Grignon de Monfort.
